Going Green in the Chippewa Valley

"Many Chippewa Valley businesses are trying different green activities," according to Dr. Nancy Hanson-Rasmussen, assistant professor of management. "Companies that may have once viewed 'going green' as a fad now view it as a priority and a viable economic growth opportunity."

A workshop series hosted by management faculty in the UW-Eau Claire Department of Management and Marketing will explore environmental sustainability practices in the Chippewa Valley. The management series consists of two 90-minute workshops that are free and open to the public. Participants who sign up for both workshops will receive a certificate of participation.

The first workshop, Green Business: Opportunities and Challenges, will be led by Hanson-Rasmussen. She will present an overview of common and more innovative green practices used by Chippewa Valley businesses, and lead participants in a group activity where they will problem solve solutions to green business challenges. Finally, Hanson-Rasmussen will share what other communities are doing to support green business and opportunities in Wisconsin. Included in this discussion is an introduction to the Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce Green Initiative, a program for local organizations that are committed to and engaged in environmentally responsible operations and practices.

The workshop will be held Wednesday, March 9 from 7:30-9:00 am in the UW-Eau Claire Davies Center Ojibwe Room. Register here by Feb. 22.

The second workshop, Green Business: Insights from the Community, provides an interactive venue where students, faculty and community members can share their experiences. The panel will be moderated by students in the Society for Human Resource Management. Discussion will touch on topics such as cost savings through energy use and recycling, and simple changes in business practices that "green" the workplace.

The workshop will be held Tuesday, April 19 from 7:30-9 a.m. in the UW-Eau Claire Davies Center Woodland Theater. Register here by Apr. 4.

The management workshop series is supported by a gift from PESI. For more information about the workshops, contact Dr. Rhetta Standifer, associate professor, Department of Management and Marketing.
