First Annual Sales Competition Set for November, 49 Participants Registered

November marks the inaugural Great Northwoods Sales Warm-Up set for the 15 - 17. Eight schools from around the Midwest are registered, including 12 students from the College of Business. This year's schools include:

  • Ball State University (Muncie, IN)

  • The College of St. Catherine (St. Paul, MN)

  • Minnesota State University Mankato (Mankato, MN)

  • Missouri Western State University (St. Joseph, MO)

  • St. Cloud State University (St. Cloud, MN)

  • University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls, IA)

  • University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire (Eau Claire, WI)

  • University of Wisconsin –La Crosse (La Crosse, WI). 

The UW-Eau Claire Great Northwoods Sales Warm-Up is a regional sales competition for Midwestern collegiate marketing students. The purpose of the event is to help students warm-up their selling skills, network with sales professionals and recruiters, and meet other students who share their interest in sales.

The event is modeled after the after the National Collegiate Sales Competition, an exciting event held every spring at Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw, Georgia. By scheduling the Great Northwoods Warm-Up in the fall, students can warm-up for the Kennesaw State event in March. 

All contestants at the Great Northwoods Sales Warm-Up will deliver two, 20-minute sales presentations (one for a Hormel product, the other for a Cintas service--these are our competition's major sponsors) to an individual buyer. Sales calls will be evaluated by a panel of sales professionals who will view presentations via cablecast at a remote location. Students will receive their evaluations sheets, a CD of their presentations and a half hour debriefing session with one of the sales professionals who evaluated their performance. 

In addition to the sales presentations, a job fair and professional development workshops are scheduled during the Warm-Up. All registered students will have the opportunity to submit their resumes for inclusion in a resume booklet which will be distributed to the sponsoring organizations. Sponsors will have informational tables and be available to meet with students on Friday and Saturday of the competition. 

Other events being planned include a Thursday night reception, a Friday night dinner sponsored by Liberty Mutual and the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Comedy Club featuring C. Willi Myles and a Saturday night awards banquet. 

Judges for the event will be from corporate sponsors. Major sponsors the competition are Hormel Foods and Cintas. Other sponsors include:

Cash prizes will be awarded for individual and team efforts with $1,500 going to Best Sales Person and a $1,000 scholarship and trophy to the college with the highest average score.
