Ceramic creator AND marketing master

In a world of study sessions and over-caffeinated drinks, Blugolds are the best people to tell you about the real UWEC experience. The students in Communication and Journalism 491 wrote about their perspectives on others, themselves and all aspects of student life. These are their stories.

After high school, I wasn't really sure where I wanted to go to college or what I wanted to do when I got there. Living in Wausau, I picked up a bunch of hobbies, but my favorite was making ceramics. Creating art had always been a passion of mine, but I never thought of it as a possible career. When I visited UW-Eau Claire, I absolutely loved the idea of what it meant to get a liberal arts education. 

After completing my freshman year, I got advice from my advisers to follow my passion for art and to also utilize my my strength in communication. That's why I decided to double major in both marketing and ceramics.

The reason I chose marketing was because of the accredited business school and my ability to sell. I could continue using my artistic creativity in ceramics and, at the same time, learn how to think critically when it came to marketing and business.

I am now finishing up my final semester of college and already have a job offer for a marketing sales position at Tom James, a worldwide company that produces custom suits. I actually discovered my employer when he came in to talk to one of my marketing classes here on campus. I spoke with him after class. He liked what I had to say, and voila! I was offered the job. Having a paid job out of college will allow me to have the capital necessary to rent a studio in Minneapolis and continue to work on ceramics. There is no greater feeling in the world than knowing you have a job before you graduate!
