A great place to grow and learn

A business degree can open the door to careers in virtually any industry—manufacturing, retailing, health care, government, nonprofits, and education—and it can also be used to help you start your own business.

Let's talk about education . . .

Did you know that 72 UW-Eau Claire College of Business alums currently work on our campus? They are teachers, advisors, coaches, and even a choreographer. You can find COB alums recruiting new students to campus, and managing the university’s buildings, finances, student records, and information technology. Some run departments and keep our buildings clean. Others have been given the important task of keeping our campus safe.

In honor of the college’s 50th Anniversary, we profiled three of our campus alums. This second article features Kent Gerberich, IT manager in Learning and Technology Services.

Kent Gerberich is very familiar with the UW-Eau Claire College of Business.

“It was literally my home for 7.5 years when I was an undergraduate and graduate student,” admits Gerberich.

Gerberich is the IT manager for the university's  Learning & Technology Services. He and his team provide operational support and strategic planning for all of the university’s network infrastructure, servers and storage infrastructure, classrooms, and other Learning Spaces along with the Voice Over IP phone system.  He also teaches an online introductory information systems course for the University of Wisconsin MBA Consortium, a graduate program managed by the UW-Eau Claire MBA Program.

Gerberich credits the College of Business faculty and staff for playing a key role in his personal and professional development.

Dr. Tony Keys was instrumental in helping me understand the world of information systems and project management, knowledge I use literally every day at work,” he said. “Dr. Scott Lester taught me how to be an effective leader, mentor and workplace coach. Robert Heintz showed me what it means to be a fun, kind hearted professional. He is one of the nicest, most genuine individuals I have ever met.”

Gerberich admits that one of his biggest concerns coming into college was his fear of public speaking. Dr. Paula Lentz, Keith Stearns, and Jan Bednar helped him get over his fear by helping him develop confidence in his communication skills.

Gerberich is proud to be a Blugold, and in particular, an alumnus of the College of Business.

“I could probably write a book about the great faculty and staff I have met and the great experiences I have had over the years through the College of Business,” he said.  “It truly is a great place to learn and grow as an individual.”
