Blugold Beginnings to offer virtual summer camps

| Judy Berthiaume

UW-Eau Claire’s Blugold Beginnings will again offer a series of summer camps for youth in the Chippewa Valley and beyond.

Given COVID-19, camps this summer will be offered virtually instead of in the traditional face-to-face format, says Jodi Thesing-Ritter, director of Blugold Beginnings.

“Our Blugold Beginnings team has been working tirelessly to create a robust offering of virtual camps this summer,” Thesing-Ritter says. “As it does every summer, Blugold Beginnings will offer multiple engaging precollege camps to give students opportunities to learn about a topic of interest to them.”

The hands-on, project-based learning camps are designed to allow participants to explore careers and build valuable academic skills, Thesing-Ritter says.

Blugold Beginnings will offer virtual summer camps for students in grades 3-5, middle and high school.

Camps include “Biomedical, Kinesiology and Nursing Camp,” “Art, Language and Culture Camp,” “STEAM Camp,” “Robotics” and “Coding Camp.”

The summer camps will take place during June and July.

“Students will be assigned to small camp groups with a Blugold Beginnings AmeriCorps counselor, just like we do during our face-to-face camps,” Thesing-Ritter says. “This will help students make personal connections throughout the week, which always has been a valuable part of our camps.”

All project learning materials for lessons will be delivered to students a week before camp starts.

The Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls school districts will provide full scholarships for students in their districts to participate. Some full scholarship monies are available for students not in those districts who qualify for free or reduced lunch. There is a $60 fee for other participants.

All camps will be offered virtually and will require that students have access to computer and Wi-Fi technology. Blugold Beginnings can assist with providing necessary technology if that is an issue for a student.
