UWEC alum finds success as designer and educator

| Denise Olson

Min Sun Lee, 2005 UWEC Art & Design alum, is currently an associated professor and director of Graphic Design program at the University of Montevallo. Min Sun Lee started her first year at UW-Eau Claire as a Business Administrator major with the emphasis on International Business. But during the end of her sophomore year, she realized that her interest was in art and business.  After researching the program, Min Sun found the perfect match for art and business degree-Graphic Design. She changed her major and after two courses she fell in love with Graphic Design .  Min Sun joined AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) UWEC student chapter to gain knowledge of design and tour studios in Minneapolis. Min Sun also frequently sought for guidance and advice from her advisor Li-Ying Bao to help her grow as a successful designer. After graduation, Min Sun attended Iowa State University and received Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design.

At the University of Montevallo, she embraces a unique combination of Korean and Western culture in her design.  She is especially interested in the research and design of unique solutions to problems involving human experience, social patterns and communication between cultures. She believes that through proper execution, design can serve as a valuable ally to those in need.  She has presented and published her work nationally and internationally on curriculum for design, interface design, and packaging design. She has been involved with Alabama Engine: AIGA Birmingham + Design Thinking, which is sponsored by AIGA National from the Aspen Summit project. She also volunteers as the education director for the Birmingham AIGA Chapter.

Along with her teaching experiences, Min Sun Lee also enriches her professional expertise by working as UI/UX designer for BooDigital and a variety of agencies, such as Cayenne Creative, Lewis Communication, and Fred (was BW&Co.) in Birmingham, Alabama.  Besides these professional endeavors, Min Sun has been heavily involved with the community, such as acting as a Volunteer Staff Graphic Designer for: Sidewalk Film Festival, AIGA Birmingham-Chair of Education, Birmingham Design Week – Event Member, RailRoad Park – Jr. Board, Cahaba River Society – Board and serving as The Innovation Center for Design Ambassadors.
