Blugolds to gather for Homecoming 2017 celebration

| Judy Berthiaume

Thousands of Blugolds will gather next weekend for the 2017 Homecoming festivities, one of UW-Eau Claire’s biggest celebrations of the year.

Current students and alumni will come together to celebrate being a Blugold during the many events that long have been part of the university’s Homecoming tradition.

Events will range from a student pep rally to alumni gatherings, as well as the popular Homecoming parade and football game.

“Alumni love to come back to campus to connect with friends and visit with favorite professors, and to enjoy time on their campus and in the wonderful Eau Claire community,” says Jane Larson, coordinator of alumni engagement. “Our current students have many of their own activities on campus during the week, but they also have fun when they join alumni at the parade, football game and other Homecoming activities throughout the weekend. They come together to celebrate all that makes being a Blugold so special.”

This year’s Homecoming celebration will run Sept. 25-Oct. 1. The theme is "Feathers will Fly: Fight not Flight!"

Students will gear up for Homecoming by joining in games and competitions throughout the week.

The traditional Snake Dance will begin at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the base of the campus hill, with the Yell-Like-Hell competition and pep rally following at 7 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

The Varsity Night Light! Show, featuring the talents of UW-Eau Claire students, will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in Zorn Arena.

Alumni events will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, with the Golden Blugold Celebration in Davies Center. Alumni who graduated in 1967 or earlier have earned the title of "Golden Blugold."

The Blugold athletics Hall of Fame will welcome its newest members during a banquet that will begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Dakota Ballroom of Davies Center.

The Homecoming Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at First Avenue.

Alumni, students and others then will gather at 11 a.m. Saturday in Carson Park for Blugold Fever Fest. The Blugold Marching Band will help fire up fans during the pregame fest.

UW-Eau Claire’s football team will take on UW-River Falls, with kickoff at 1 p.m. Saturday in Carson Park. The Blugold Marching Band also will provide the halftime entertainment.

The Homecoming celebration will continue after the game, with The Fifth Quarter beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday in Carson Park. The postgame event will feature the Alumni Blugold Marching Band.

A number of other events for alumni are planned for Homecoming weekend, all designed to bring together Blugolds from various majors, residence halls, sports teams and other organizations.
