Summary: The Wisconsin Nurses Association (WNA), founded in 1909, provides professional support to nurses and advocates for improved nursing and health standards.  The association’s Eau Claire area regional district (District 10) was created in 1946.  The WNA District 10 records consist of six series: meeting minutes, annual reports, newspaper clippings, financial records, membership records and miscellaneous material.

Biographical / Historical Note

In the summer of 1909 a group of nurses met at Milwaukee Children's Hospital to form an organization in the Milwaukee area. Late in 1909 this group met with nurses from Fond du Lac, Madison, Oshkosh, and Racine to work toward a state organization – the Wisconsin Nurses Association (WNA).  Bylaws, articles of incorporation, and a constitution were drawn up by the end of 1909.

In 1912 a field secretary was appointed to promote the organization of county and sectional groups. Originally, three districts, Madison, Oshkosh, and Milwaukee, were established. As the parent organization grew in membership, county groups formed small and accessible districts.  From 1946 to the present there have been fifteen district affiliates, District 10 (Eau Claire, Wis.) being one of them.

District 10 generally has four to five meetings per year, including, an annual meeting with legislators. In August they meet with other Districts in northwest Wisconsin for our regional meeting in Rice Lake. The counties included in District 10 are Barron, Rusk, Dunn, Chippewa, Eau Claire, Clark, Pepin, Buffalo and Jackson counties.

The Wisconsin Nurses Association provides support to nurses and for the field of nursing in general. The Wisconsin Nurses Association helps to uphold high standards of nursing, promote the professional development of nurses and work for the improvement of health standards.
