Biographical / Historical Note

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was established in 1933 as a work relief program for unemployed Americans. Wisconsin had a number of camps that housed CCC workers as they labored on trails, bridges, buildings, and other public facilities. Enrollment in the CCC had dwindled by 1940, as young men were drafted into military service. The CCC disbanded officially in 1942, when Congress eliminated the program’s funding.

Content Description

The collection includes newsletters from the following camps: Camp Nelson (Company 652), Camp Globe (Company 2618), Camp Fairchild (Company 1605), Camp Riley (Company 642), Camp Sailor Lake (Company 642), Camp Sheep Ranch (Company 644), Camp Connors Lake (Company 1610), Camp Rusk (Company 3652), Camp Chippewa River (Company 1606), Camp Loretta (Company 648), Camp Sawyer (Company 2617), Camp Smith Lake (Company 647), Camp Jump River (Company 3651), Camp Perkinstown (Company 1692), and Camp Mondeaux (Company 1503 or 1603). The newsletters document primarily social life and recreational activities at the camp and include articles, essays, drawings, and poems by corps members. Work bulletins may also be found in the newsletters.
