Summary:
The EOC provides programs, services, publications, and information to adult students and offers services in orientation and advising, career development, curricular and faculty development, research, recruitment, and retention. This collection includes annual reports, audits, committee files, general department records, publications, course files and project and program records for the offices of Educational Opportunity Center and preceding departments.
Biographical / Historical Note
In 1974, the Returning Adult Students Advising, Programming and Outreach position was formed within the Academic Advising offices, creating the Older Student Advisement Program. In 1976, formal offices were created for the Educational Opportunity coordinator and staff to facilitate programs and services for returning adult students and senior auditors seeking to continue their education, later becoming known as the Adult Opportunity Office. In 1978, the Federal Government TRIO program, which supports and provides educational opportunity outreach programs for disadvantaged students, funded the creation of the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC). The Adult Opportunity Office, the Minority Services Center and Special Services for Disadvantaged Students were moved together into the EOC. As of 2010, the EOC offices are in the Human Sciences and Services building on campus. The EOC provides programs, services, publications and information to adult students and offers services in orientation and advising, career development, curricular and faculty development, research, recruitment and retention.

This series is divided into nine subseries: General files, Annual Reports, Department Publications, Committee files, Course files, Project and Program Files, Affirmative Action, Title IX and Title IX Implementation.

Subseries contains core departmental records and miscellaneous files. Included are office studies, data and analyses, scholarships, procedures, budget reports and records, faculty development, newspaper clippings and articles, student program rosters, and audit and review records. Also contains files pertaining to the Basic Skills Task Force (BSTF), a commission that worked throughout the University of Wisconsin System in the late 1970s and early 1980s to establish the basic skill set needed by college students and develop a plan to educate students in those skills.

Subseries contains annual reports of activities and services of the offices of the Educational Opportunity Center and its predecessors. Included within the reports are discussions of department history and programs, goals, objectives, highlights of accomplishments of the past year, statistics and recommendations for the future. Subseries also contains performance reports detailing the financial and operational status of various programs within the EOC funded by grants.

The “Outreach Times” was a newsletter produced at the beginning of each semester to provide information and guidance to non-traditional students. Courses mainly pertain to business, marketing and finance, including advertising, business practices, human resources, and technology. Also included is course information on workshops, which mainly concern personal improvement, such as time management, effectiveness, organization and teambuilding.
