Historical Note

Ms. Marion Fleming, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin (Madison, Wis.) and resident of Eau Claire, Wis., established the Chippewa Valley Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).  The branch’s organizational meeting was held on April 28, 1923 in the City Hall auditorium.  Seventeen women attended, each possessing either a B.A. degree or more than one year of college or university education.  Although the current Eau Claire Branch of the AAUW was chartered in 1959, this group seems to have been an important precursor.

The branch sought to improve education and cultivate civic responsibility.  During its first year, there were ten meetings in which lecturers spoke about educational and political issues. 

Content Description

The record book consists of about 30 pages of material, including the national and Wisconsin state constitutions of the American Association of University Women, an initial membership list, meeting minutes, clippings, and the 1923 annual report. Also included is the newsletter, Foliage, meeting minutes, by-laws and strategic plans, membership booklets, conference materials, financial reports, and photos.
