Biographical / Historical Note

The Scandinavian-American Fraternity, previously known as the Independent Scandinavian Workingmen’s Association, was founded in Chicago in the 1880s. The Eau Claire branch was started in 1889, but soon broke away from its parent organization.  The Eau Claire Independent Scandinavian Workingmen’s Association formed its own Grand Lodge in 1893.  The organization provided life insurance, sickness and accident funds, and emergency funds to its members.  In 1950, Eau Claire’s Norden 1 Branch had 1,175 members, both male and female.

This small collection contains articles of incorporation, by-laws, and a convention and dedication program that includes a brief history of Norden Branch 1.
