Summary: Arthur Julius Fox, one of the original faculty members of the Eau Claire State Normal School, was a former registrar and dean of instruction at Eau Claire State Teachers College. He retired in 1948 after 32 years of service at the college. This collection includes the general correspondence of A.J. Fox from 1939 to 1948 as well as his Teacher’s Program and Service Reports, his transcript from the University of Chicago, and newspaper clippings of his death in 1958.

Biographical / Historical Note

Arthur Fox began his teaching career in a rural school in Vernon County, Wisconsin. Later, he took a course at Steven’s Point Normal School and taught in the upper grades in his home town of Hillsboro. After being a ward school principal in Wisconsin Rapids, Fox taught for two years at Barnum, Minnesota, was principal at Frankfurt, South Dakota, and superintendent at Willow Lakes, South Dakota. During his time in Minnesota and South Dakota, Fox took summer school work at the University of Chicago. Fox also attended Stout Institute. After he graduated, Fox accepted a position as a teacher in industrial arts at Madison Central High School, where he remained for three years.

When the Eau Claire State Normal School was built in 1916, Fox came to plan and equip the industrial arts department. He would head this department for five years. Fox also performed teacher training work and in 1926 was appointed as the first registrar of the college. After three years in the position, he asked for a release and began teaching education courses until 1939, when he was reappointed registrar for the Eau Claire State Teachers College. Fox was named Dean of Instruction as well as Registrar under college President William R. Davies. Fox completed his graduate work at Stanford University in California during the summers while on the Eau Claire faculty. He retired in 1948 after 32 years of service at the college. He died on October 17, 1958, at the age of 80.

Content Description

General correspondence of Arthur J. Fox from 1939 to 1948 while he was Dean of Instruction and Registrar at the Eau Claire State Teachers College. Also included are some of Fox’s Teacher’s Program and Service Reports, his transcript from the University of Chicago, and newspaper clippings of his death in 1958.
