Abstract: Correspondence of three Eau Claire mayors: G. Donald Barnes, Orville Christianson, and W. J. Mills. Routine matters include “fixing” of parking tickets, job recommendations, petitions, the Wisconsin Retirement Fund, promotion of Eau Claire as both a convention site and an industrial site, and the furtherance of highway construction. Problems specifically related to World War II include unemployment, purchase of war bonds, attempts to get needed city employees out of the service early, and the rationing caused by the war. Many of the letters are to and from prominent Wisconsin politicians such as Congressman Merlin Hull, Senators Alexander Wiley and R. M. La Follette, Jr., and Governors Julius Heil and Walter Goodland.
