Continuing Education: Registration Troubleshooting

Last updated

Registration Error

Continuing Education (CE) at UW-Eau Claire offers a variety of programs and courses, and an option to register for these courses online. This registration is through the website, which has recently updated its encryption, allowing customers maximized information security while customers make credit card payments to CE online. However, this security change requires browser support for TLS v1.2 in order for the registration site to function.

Customers registering to CE courses online while using Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer 11, or Edge as their browser should not experience any issues in accessing the registration site.

Customers using an older version of Internet Explorer, such as Internet Explorer 10, or any older version, will not be able to access CE registration, and will encounter a screen similar to the picture below.

This issue can be resolved in various different ways.

Use an Alternative Browser

If the user has a browser other than Internet Explorer 10 (or older) installed, such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, they can open the registration in a different browser and bypass the access issue.

Enable TLS v1.1 and TLS v1.2

If the user does not have access to a different browser, they can take steps to allow TLS v1.1 and TLS v1.2, the new security measures, in their current browser.

  1. Navigate to the Internet Explorer main menu.
  2. Click Tools.
  3. Click Internet Options.
  4. In the Internet Options box, select the Advanced tab.
  5. In the Security category, uncheck Use SSL 3.0 and check Use TLS 1.0, Use TLS 1.1, and Use TLS 1.2 (if available).
  6. Click OK.
  7. Exit and restart Internet Explorer.

Update or Install Browser

If the user is using Internet Explorer 10 or any older version, they can update their browser. To do this, users can access the Microsoft download website, select the appropriate version of Internet Explorer they would like to download, and follow the provided download instructions.
NOTE: Internet Explorer 11 can only be installed using Windows 7 and newer; this update will not work on Windows Vista and older.

Users can also install a different browser to use, such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. They can follow the link to the desired browser download website and follow the provided instructions to install them.
