Risk Management, Safety and Sustainability: Environmental Health & Safety Manager

POSITION: A full-time academic staff position is available in the department of Risk Management, Safety, and Sustainability. The official title for this position is Environmental Health and Safety Manager. This is a fixed term renewable assignment which requires a six-month probationary period. The expected hiring salary will be based on qualifications and experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's, or higher, degree from an accredited institution
• Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Exceptional organizational, multitasking skills
• Supervisory experience
• Experience in Laboratory setting (fume hoods, chemical inventory, lab equipment)
• Experience in Industrial Hygiene and Hazard Assessments
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness
• Strong ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders

DUTIES: This position will serve as a resource in the development of Risk Management, Safety and Sustainability Department vision and goals.  Duties will be focused on promoting a culture of environmental safety and sustainability.

• Consult with and advise the Director of Risk Management and Safety, University administrators, faculty, staff and students on health and safety concerns. Counsel safety committees and other risk management functions as directed.
• Interpret federal, state, and local health and safety codes and act as the university liaison with those agencies to implement codes and regulations.
• Perform select risk management duties when the Director of Risk Management and Safety has requested or when unavailable.
• In collaboration with Risk Management personnel, develop and implement hazardous waste handling and treatment methods and train university personnel in these activities.
• Proactively monitors and implements strategies to reduce energy consumption and overall operational expenses.
• Supervise the Hibernation process within designated areas. Ensure proper handling, transporting, and storage of all chemicals removed from hibernation areas. Coordinate and communicate with all laboratory managers during hibernation process.
• Training: Any employee working in this position shall successfully complete annual classroom instructions and/or on-the-job training required.
• Collaborate with Chemical Stockroom Manager in processes surrounding chemical storage and other related items.
• Collaborate with Environmental Health Specialist in processes surrounding hazardous waste storage and transportation.
• Collaborate and/or lead fume hood inspections and processes.
• Conduct laboratory hazard and risk assessments.
• In collaboration with Risk Management personnel, help lead or coordinate Health and Safety processes during construction of new science building and demolition of former science building.
• Be willing to complete and acquire LEED Certification credentials.
• Be focused on creating sustainable laboratories (Green Lab program).
• Identify safety training needs of staff and students; lead, coordinate, or assist in training programs and seminars.
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate Health and Safety Training programs to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
• Other duties as assigned.
