Biology: Lecturer in Biological Inquiry
POSITION: A full-time, instructional academic staff position is available in the Department of Biology with an emphasis in Biological Inquiry for the 2023-2024 academic year beginning January 29, 2024. The official title is in the Lecturer title series. This is a one-year appointment with salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
QUALIFICATIONS: At minimum, a Masters degree is required from an accredited institution. A degree in an area of human biology is preferred and demonstrated evidence of successfully teaching courses at the collegiate level is required. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness is an asset.
DUTIES: The successful candidate will contribute to our curriculum by teaching BIOL 223, Foundations of Biological Inquiry. This is the last class in a 3-course core sequence for Biology majors. The teaching commitment is approximately 9 contact hours per week. Opportunities also exist to engage in service to the Department, College, University and/or community. Salary and rank will be commensurate with teaching experience.
THE UNIT: The Department of Biology currently has 15 faculty, 3 instructors, a lab manager, a greenhouse/animal care manager, and approximately 600 Biology majors including 100 Biochemistry/Molecular Biology majors. Department members are dedicated to teaching and are actively involved in research with undergraduates as demonstrated by co-authored presentations and publications. The Department is affiliated with the Institute for Health Sciences on campus, which is a consortium of academic departments and programs that support the advancement and visibility of the pre-professional and professional health science programs.
Departmental facilities include a variety of teaching and research laboratories, standard cell and molecular instrumentation, equipment and facilities for cell culture, gel and blot documentation systems, a real-time PCR system, and shared access to conventional and confocal fluorescence microscopes and transmission and scanning electron microscopes. In addition, we have three greenhouses and an animal care facility. Research is supported by both external and internal grants, and we participate in the Ronald McNair Post- baccalaureate Achievement Program. Internal funds are also available to support faculty and student travel to professional meetings.
