Center for Writing Excellence: Assistant Director of the Center and Lecturer

A full-time academic staff position is available in the Center for Writing Excellence beginning August 21st, 2023. The working title for this position is Assistant Director of the Center for Writing Excellence, with an official title of Lecturer.  This appointment is renewable by your supervisor, contingent on performance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned M.A. or Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric, Communication, Writing Studies, or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated excellence teaching and/or mentoring writing at the college level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in teaching, research, and service.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Background in writing centers, especially administrative experience.
  • Scholarly interest in the field of writing centers and/or writing studies.
  • Expertise in digital communications, including website maintenance.
  • Interest, experience, or enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaborations.

The Center for Writing Excellence (CWE) serves students across all disciplines and years in school. In addition to in-person and online appointments, the CWE facilitates in-class workshops, engages campus through programming, and sustains a Faculty Writing Fellows program—one that seeks to better familiarize faculty with writing center studies and support the teaching and mentoring of writing in their courses. The CWE is committed to a larger culture of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Wisconsin—Eau Claire and is invested in creating more socially just approaches to supporting all students, including those most marginalized and from historically underrepresented groups. To support the mission of the CWE, the Assistant Director will be responsible for overseeing most day-to-day operations of the CWE and will facilitate and develop new initiatives related to writing support for students and classrooms. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for studying and suggesting innovative approaches to mentoring student interns, including supporting scholarship they are encouraged to submit to writing center conferences.

The center maintains close relations with the English Department through joint appointments. The Assistant Director will teach first-year writing courses under the supervision of the Director of the Writing Program and Chair of the English Department. Depending on their academic credentials and curricular needs, the Assistant Director will have the opportunity to teach lower and upper-division courses of interest. The immediate supervisor for the position is the Director of the CWE.

Major Responsibilities

Programming and Assessment

  • Design, implement and evaluate programming to support student writing inside and outside the classroom and across all disciplines.
  • Develop and run ongoing assessment initiatives, including researching, and drafting annual reports.

Mentoring

  • Work to integrate EDI Initiatives throughout all recruiting methods and the mentoring of undergraduate Writing Assistant Interns.
  • Lead the recruiting of new Writing Assistant Interns.
  • Create and assess innovative approaches to ongoing mentoring of student interns beyond a tutor training course (English 397: Writing Center Theory and Practice).

Curricular Support and Faculty Development

  • Work closely with faculty to identify partnership opportunities and ongoing curricular support (e.g., class workshops). In addition to planning and facilitating these partnerships, train undergraduate students to assist as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Director to expand a Faculty Writing Fellows program.
  • Develop instructional materials and media for use in the CWE and by faculty to support a Writing Enhanced Curriculum.
  • Assist the Director of the Writing Program and the Director of the CWE in providing support for the first-year writing program.

English Department

  • Pursue responsibilities as part of a 50% joint appointment in English.
  • Teach up to eight credits of first-year writing per semester. 
  • Teach other writing or English studies courses as needed.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development informing the teaching and mentoring of writing.
  • Foster student-driven inquiry through pedagogical innovation.
