Music and Theatre Arts: Assistant Director of Athletic Bands
The Department of Music and Theatre Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a 12-Month Full-Time Instructional Academic Staff Position for the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands beginning August 1, 2022. The official title is in the Lecturer title series. This is a one-year renewable appointment with a salary of $48,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in Music or Music Education required. Significant experience in teaching marching and concert bands required, preferably at the collegiate level. Experience with collegiate basketball band will be considered an asset. Ability to collaborate on drill, show design, music, and choreography required, and/or music technology (Finale, Pyware, Sound Production, on field Audio Electronics). Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, organize tours, and maintain instrument inventory. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve as Assistant Director of the 450-member Blugold Marching Band, which involves serving a central instructional role. Coordinate and supervise the currently student-led Blugold Athletic Band (basketball). Create a course surrounding Blugold Athletic Band and serve as its instructor. Collaborate with concert band faculty and conduct a university concert band. Assist as needed with the Varsity Band (choreographed stage shows). Oversee BMB equipment inventory (instruments, uniforms, electronics, etc.). Coordinate BMB student equipment staff. Oversee Department of Music and Theatre instrument inventory. Supervise departmental student instrument manager for non-BMB equipment. Participate in all phases of BMB planning, design, and enrollment management. Help coordinate youth programming. Perform other duties as assigned.
DEPARTMENT: The Department of Music and Theatre Arts serves over 400 majors and minors supported by approximately 30 full-time and 11 part-time faculty and 7 staff. UW-Eau Claire has a large and respected Instrumental Program, with three concert bands, one of the largest marching bands in the country, four jazz bands, two orchestras, and an active chamber music program. The Band program provides enriching musical experiences for over 600 students each year. The concert bands perform numerous concerts on campus and at the Pablo Center at the Confluence each year, and the Blugold Marching Band (BMB) performs at Blugold home games, contest exhibitions, and other selected events. The BMB takes a major International Performance Tour every other year. Blugold Athletic Band is a student-led ensemble of approximately 150 students that performs at home basketball games. Varsity Band is a 100-member ensemble that performs choreographed stage shows at local high schools during the spring semester. The Department is highly regarded in the state and region and enriches the Eau Claire community while providing outstanding academic opportunities. Faculty are active solo and collaborative performers and are dedicated to innovative teaching. Academic programs include the BM degree in performance and composition; the BME degree in instrumental and choral music education; the BA and BS degrees in music and musical theatre.
