Outreach Assistant Director - Small Business Development Center

A full-time, professional academic staff position is available in the Continuing Education- Small Business Development Center beginning January 3, 2022.   The official job title is Outreach Specialist.  This is a renewable assignment, contingent on performance. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Business-related field.
  • Significant experience working in a small business environment.
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of business financial statements.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Valid Driver’s License to travel to clients in SBDC service area.
  • Demonstrated:
    • Ability to deliver one-on-one consulting and public presentations
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize work, delegate, and manage multiple projects simultaneously under deadline pressure
    • Ability to work well independently and/or as part of a team
    • Ability to remain adaptable and flexible to different situations and priority changes

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Advanced knowledge of preparing and using financial statements.
  • Demonstrated understanding of accounting systems, business taxation and financial reporting principles and concepts.
  • Prior experience with commercial lending and banking and financing services for small businesses.
  • Prior one-on-one consulting experience with small businesses.
  • Experience with small business ownership.
  • Role in upper management of a small business.

DUTIES:

  • Responds to client requests for financial consulting and assistance including initial screening of client requests, assessing client needs and identifying appropriate SBDC response.
  • Provides direct one-on-one financial consulting services to clients through client meetings and the preparation and review financial projections and statements using excel spreadsheets, the review of client business plans and other consultant support tasks.  
  • Coordinates the SBDC Center’s financial consulting engagements and workflow with center staff, the Accounting and Financial Clinic and the SBDC Network Capital Access Team.
  • Supports the work of the Accounting and Financial Clinic through coaching and mentoring student interns in support of the Clinic work.  
  • Supports and serves as a financial consultant with the SBDC Network Capital Access Team.
  • Regularly travels to and meets with local economic development organizations to foster relationships, provide support to these organizations, serve clients in outlying areas and to secure client referrals.
  • Fosters relationships with and serves as a liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups including bankers, economic development organizations and other community members communicating SBDC information, seeking referrals and fostering SBDC Center success.
  • Attends and represents the interests of the SBDC and UW Eau Claire at community and stakeholder events and meetings throughout Northwest Wisconsin to further University and SBDC program goals.   
  • Assures the upkeep and maintenance of SBDC client database and provides support in meeting and timely reporting of SBDC metrics to stakeholders.  
  • Assists with developing and monitoring the budgets and expenditures of SBDC outreach consulting.

THE UNIT: Reporting to Director of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UW Eau Claire, this position assists in the development, promotion, and delivery of quality one-on-one client financial consulting services to help people in the community start and grow their businesses. The SBDC serves businesses in Eau Claire, Chippewa, Dunn, Barron, Rusk, Taylor, Pepin and Clark Counties. The position may be based out of Eau Claire or Rice Lake SBDC office.
