Biology: Assistant Professor in Infectious Disease Biology
The Department of Biology invites applications for a probationary tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 22nd, 2022. We are searching for a broadly trained infectious disease biologist utilizing molecular approaches to address questions about disease transmission, pathogenesis, or immune response. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in microbiology and research involving vector-borne pathogens in animal host systems. Candidates must be committed to excellence in undergraduate instruction and faculty-student collaborative research. Candidates must embrace the university’s commitment to in equity, diversity, and inclusivity; all UWEC faculty are evaluated on efforts in EDI, in addition to efforts in teaching, research, and service.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. degree and interest in joining a department that values excellence in teaching undergraduates, collaborative research with undergraduates, and engagement in equity, diversity, and inclusivity efforts.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Postdoctoral experience, experience in university undergraduate teaching utilizing innovative methods of instruction, and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusivity.
DUTIES: The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching introductory biology courses for majors (Foundations of Biology core), upper-level courses for majors (e.g. Molecular and Cell Biology, Infectious Disease Ecology, Biology of Microorganisms), in addition to offering upper-level coursework related to their expertise. The teaching commitment is approximately 12 contact hours per week. The successful candidate will develop an active research program involving undergraduates and is expected to provide academic advising to students (in collaboration with Advising, Retention, and Career Center) and engage in service to the Department, College, University and/or community. Salary will be commensurate with teaching and research experience.
DEPARTMENT: The Department of Biology currently has 15 faculty, 3 instructors, a lab manager, a greenhouse/animal care manager, and approximately 600 majors. Department members are dedicated to teaching and are actively involved in interdisciplinary research with undergraduates and colleagues as demonstrated by co-authored presentations and publications. The Department works closely with the Health Careers Center on campus to support the advancement of pre-professional and professional health science students and programs. In 2017, UW Eau Claire established a unique collaborative research agreement with Mayo Clinic. This agreement is supported by an administrative structure and funding for collaborative research projects involving our faculty and students.
Departmental facilities include a variety of teaching and research laboratories appropriate for BSL-2 procedures, standard cell and molecular instrumentation, equipment and facilities for cell culture, gel and blot documentation systems, a real-time PCR system, and shared access to conventional and confocal fluorescence microscopes, transmission and scanning electron microscopes, and the UWEC high performance supercomputing cluster. In addition, we have three greenhouses and an animal care facility. Research is supported by both external and internal grants supported through the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, and our faculty mentor students from diverse backgrounds in research through the Ronald McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program. Internal funds are also available to support summer research stipends and travel to professional meetings for both students and faculty mentors.
