The ResCom Help Desk is UW-Eau Claire's support team for the computing and technology infrastructure within Housing & Residence Life.

Before You Connect

Make sure you are aware of the UW-Eau Claire's Computer and Network Usage Guidelines. Any devices detected within Housing & Residence Life network that are compromised by malware, spyware, viruses or personal routers/access points that are causing network problems or abuse or are in violation of the UWEC Copyright Policy, are subject to be removed from the network.

Connecting to the Wired Network

Most residence hall student rooms have four wired, Ethernet ports on a single wall jack or two separate wall jacks, each containing two Ethernet ports. There are two exceptions to this rule:

Putnam Hall: Rooms in Putnam Hall only have two ports per room. The only exception to this is if your room hosts a wireless access point.

Chancellor's Hall: Room A has ports 1 and 2, Room B has ports 3 and 4, Room C has ports 5 and 6, and Room D has ports 7 and 8. There are no Ethernet ports in the common living room.

To use a wired connection, you must request an Ethernet port to be activated (this is for Wired connections only, not for Wireless). For more information, please refer to the Ports Activations section below.

Connecting to the Wireless Network

To connect to our campus wireless network, you need to connect your device to the "UWEC" network SSID. You will need your UWEC username and password to connect.  You will use this network across all of campus, including the residence halls.

For other devices such as gaming consoles, TV's and other non-standard devices, use the "UWEC_RES_OtherDevices" network SSID.  Please contact the ResCom Help Desk for the password.

Basic Troubleshooting

If your internet connection is not working, please try the following steps:

  • Restart your computer or device. Power it all the way down, leave it off for several seconds, and then turn it back on.
  • For wired connections:
    • *Check that the Ethernet cable is plugged in to your activated port. It should be labeled on a sticker on the wall jack.
    • *Look for a "link light" on the Ethernet (network) card on your computer. If there is no light, either the network is not configured correctly or the Ethernet cable may be bad.
    • *Try using a different Ethernet cable.
Residence Hall Wired (Ethernet) Port Configuration

Most residence hall student rooms have four wired, Ethernet ports on a single wall jack or two separate wall jacks, each containing two Ethernet ports. There are two exceptions to this rule:

  • Putnam Hall: Rooms in Putnam Hall only have two ports per room. The only exception to this is if your room hosts a wireless access point.
  • Chancellor's Hall: Room A has ports 1 and 2, Room B has ports 3 and 4, Room C has ports 5 and 6, and Room D has ports 7 and 8. There are no Ethernet ports in the common living room.
Request a Port Activation

To request an Ethernet port to be activated in your room please submit a port activation request form.

Port activation requests are normally completed within 24-48 business hours. You will receive an email confirmation upon completion.

We currently do not offer wired port activations in Haymarket Landing or Priory Hall.

Our cable TV service here in the Residence Halls is a High Definition signal. In order to use our cable service, your TV must have a QAM tuner built in to receive channels. If your TV does not have a QAM tuner you will need to purchase a tuner box that is QAM compatible.  More information on Housing Cable TV.

We also offer Spectrum U which will allow students to watch live TV from Charter directly on their Android or iOS device.  More information on Spectrum U.
