State-of-the-university speech to be broadcast online

UW-Eau Claire Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich will focus on two major policy initiatives during his state-of-the-university speech Tuesday, Aug. 21, at UW-Eau Claire's all-employee Blugold Breakfast and academic year opening meeting in Zorn Arena. University alumni and friends can view a live Web video stream of the opening meeting, which begins at 8:30 a.m. (Following the meeting, the archived video stream will be available at the link above.) The chancellor will address (1) finalizing and implementing a new strategic vision for the university and (2) broadening the borders of the university by strengthening and expanding community partnerships. Along with Steven Tallant, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, the chancellor also will present the annual faculty and staff excellence awards. back to top

UW-Eau Claire again places high in U.S.News rankings
U.S.News & World Report magazine has again named UW-Eau Claire among the best public regional universities in the Midwest. The 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges" ranks UW-Eau Claire No. 5 among the top regional public universities in the Midwest and 26th among all private and public institutions in the Midwest. The publication has ranked UW-Eau Claire among the top five public institutions in the Midwest every year since 1995.

U.S.News & World Report also recognized UW-Eau Claire's undergraduate research and service-learning programs in its online 2008 "Programs to Look For" lists. The lists include schools with outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success. Full story. back to top

The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association presented awards to three alumni and friends of the university Aug. 4 at a special luncheon and ceremony in conjunction with summer commencement. Masayoshi Yamazaki received the Honorary Alumnus Award, Keith Malmstadt '74 (BBA) '80 (MBA) received the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award and Benjamin Licht '02 (BA, political science) received the Outstanding Recent Alumnus Award. Calling all Blugolds! The following September events are great opportunities to connect with fellow UW-Eau Claire alums:

River boat cruise graphicRiver boat cruise, Sept. 15: Enjoy a Mississippi River Cruise on the Spirit of the Water. Boarding will be at 10:30 a.m. with a 11 a.m. departure from Treasure Island Resort & Casino in Red Wing, Minn. Enjoy spectacular views and a deli lunch buffet. The boat will return to port at 1 p.m. The cost for this event is $30 per person. Advance registration is required by calling the UW-Eau Claire alumni office at 715-836-3266, sending e-mail to alumni@uwec.edu or submitting the event registration form found in the event brochure.

Twins vs. White Sox graphicMinnesota Twins-Chicago White Sox game, Sept. 23: Attend UW-Eau Claire Day at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, when the Minnesota Twins play the Chicago White Sox. UW-Eau Claire's The Singing Statesmen will perform the national anthem at 12:55 p.m. before the 1:10 p.m. game. Tickets for the game only are $10 (regularly $20), or purchase tickets for the pregame tailgate party and game at $20 per person. The tailgate party on the plaza (west side of Metrodome) will include potato salad, hamburgers, hotdogs and beverages. The UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association is gearing up for Homecoming 2007, to be held Oct. 5-6. From the parade on First Avenue to the Blugold Fever Fest, football game and Fifth Quarter postgame party in Carson Park, you won't want to miss a thing! (See complete Homecoming 2007 details.) Alumni planning to attend Homecoming are encouraged to complete the online Homecoming 2007 Attendance Form. Names, class years and favorite UW-Eau Claire memories of those who submit the form will be posted on the Homecoming 2007 Attendance List, which alumni can check regularly for names of old friends and classmates. CareerLink offers alums enhanced job search opportunities
Alumni CareerLink logoA career service for Blugold alumni has been enhanced to provide more job opportunities and to be more user friendly.

Alumni CareerLink, offered free of charge by UW-Eau Claire's Career Services, is an online searchable database that allows employers to list job openings and search profiles of available candidates. It also allows alumni seeking employment to search for positions and to list their own profiles for employers to view. Previously only alumni employers were able to list with the service. Now any employer is able to participate.

"This is a terrific tool for both employers and employees," said Jeanne Skoug, director of career services. "We want to encourage alumni seeking employment to sign up and to open up the number of employment opportunities by granting more employers access to the site. Full story. back to top

The UW-Eau Claire Blugold Hall of Fame will induct its newest members Saturday, Sept. 15. The inductees, all Blugold athletes from the 1980s and early 1990s, will be recognized during the UW-Eau Claire vs. Alma College of Michigan football game, which begins at 1p.m. at Carson Park. The inductees and their sports include brothers Alex Hicks '04 and Mark Hicks '94, hockey; Pete Balistrieri '91 and Dan Kelner '91, '94 (MS), football and track; Dan Schmidt '92, track; Steve Hollman '87, swimming; Beth Brochhausen '91, volleyball and softball; and Tammy Brandt Stanius '96, soccer and softball. The induction banquet will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites, Eau Claire. Reservations for the banquet are requested by Sept. 7 and can be made by calling (715) 836-3266 or sending e-mail to alumni@uwec.edu. Tickets are $20 per person. with UW-Eau Claire students at September events
scene from Career ConferenceThree UW-Eau Claire events in September will foster connections between UW-Eau Claire students and various organizations. If your business or organization would like to participate, follow the "full story" links below for registration deadlines and more information:

  • The university invites community businesses, area organizations such as neighborhood associations and churches, and city departments to campus to promote their services and products to students during Connect! (Campus-Community Connection) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.Wednesday, Sept. 5, on the Central Campus Mall. Full story.

  • Local, state and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations and nongovernmental organizations are invited to participate in UW-Eau Claire's Community Action Fair Thursday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. The event is an opportunity for these organizations to speak with students about volunteer options, internships and careers in the common good. Full story.

  • Employers and organizations can now register for the 50th annual Career Conference to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in Zorn Arena. The Career Conference offers students and alumni the opportunity to discuss career plans, exchange resumes and make preliminary contacts with participating organizations. These contacts allow employers to follow up with more formal interviews either on or off campus. More than 100 employers, including companies, graduate schools and state and federal agencies, attend this event each year. Full story. back to top

On Aug. 15, Bernie (left) and Dan (right) Zylstra of Clockworks and Engraving installed new inner workings for the clock, which was purchased and installed with the construction of the mall in 1987.
