UW-Eau Claire has a "Geography Awareness Week" the second week each November to inform others more about the department, majors and field.

They have gone above and beyond their call of duty, their interest in me ultimately landed me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the fellowship and internship for the Environmental Protection Agency in Denver, Colorado.

Gain cutting-edge skills in a field that is rapidly growing. Geospatial refers to global positioning systems, geographic information systems, computer cartography and other geographical technology. These devices acquire, analyze and communicate information connected to a specific location. In addition, these technologies and the resulting spatial data are in demand as their utility in decision making and problem solving becomes evident across industries ranging from health care to business development.

The U.S. Department of Labor has listed geospatial technology and its use as one of 14 "high-growth, high-demand and economically vital sectors of the American economy" and estimates its growth rate to be almost 35 percent annually. Typical salary for jobs in this field range from $40,000 - $60,000 a year.

They do all this while teaching courses that encourage critical thinking and communication skills that prepare you for many 21st century careers. You’ll be met with high expectations from the faculty and staff, and given all the tools to exceed them.

Internships

Faculty and staff have established connections with employers so Blugolds have access to paid and unpaid internships. While some of these occur over the summer, in certain instances students continue to serve as interns during the semester, which provides a unique educational opportunity. Majors are required to complete an internship or capstone as part of this major.

Research Opportunities

You’ll have research experiences that prepare you for your career while working closely with expert faculty. And UW-Eau Claire is one the best places to conduct research — you get to use advanced equipment and study fascinating places on and off campus. The research opportunities the department of geography and anthropology offer are usually only available to graduate students at other universities. You’ll study things like bikeable cities, the Chippewa River, gentrification trends or hypoxic zones in the Mississippi River delta. Unique experiences like these create knowledge and memories that last a lifetime.

Innovative Facilities

The world is a geographer’s classroom! You can study beautiful natural landmarks right around Eau Claire like the Chippewa River — or on travels to places like Hawaii or France. You’ll research these landmarks using the latest equipment like unmanned aerial systems (UAS), global positioning system (GPS) and ground penetrating radar (GPR). Studying these places is a blast, whether by hiking, paddling a canoe or even boating. After seeing the sites and gathering data you’ll take your findings back to one of the department’s state-of-the-art curricular or research labs equipped with the top-notch hardware and industry standard software. All of these facilities and equipment come together to provide you geographical insight found nowhere else.

Program Options

As a Blugold, you will have the opportunity to take introductory level classes to help you discover which specific direction you want to pursue, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or Remoting Sensing. Once you have decided, you will learn from professors who are industry leaders.
