Prepared for Success

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau consistently rank actuarial careers as one of the best jobs in the U.S. The demand remains strong in the traditional actuarial roles of pricing and reserving insurance products, and many actuaries are now employed in other non-insurance areas of the financial sector. Numerous actuaries serve in the emerging field of enterprise risk management. The actuarial career as a whole seems less susceptible to economic cycles than other fields.

Students have been awarded prestigious scholarships such as those sponsored by the Actuarial Foundation. Numerous employers come to the annual UW-Eau Claire Career Conference seeking our actuarial students for internships and full-time opportunities. Starting salaries typically range from mid $50K to low $70K and salaries commonly exceed $100K after completing fellow-ship certification by completing the professional exams.

The interdisciplinary comprehensive major provides students with a strong background in mathematics, accounting, economics and business finance. Many students choose to pursue additional certificates or minors in information system and/or business communications. UW-Eau Claire's Actuarial Science program graduates are in high demand. Students with at least one professional exam passed have a 90% job placement rate in actuarial or related roles.

Because employers typically pay future professional exam fees and provide study time, most graduates begin a career as an entry level actuarial analyst following graduation.

Why UW-Eau Claire

Rankings / Reputation / Well-funded programs

UW-Eau Claire’s Actuarial Science program is one of approximately 30 U.S. programs that include coursework covering at least five of the professional exams recognized by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS). In addition, the Actuarial Science program includes courses that satisfy all Validation by Educational Experience requirements of the SOA and CAS.

The actuarial science minor also prepares students for at least two professional exams recognized by the SOA and CAS.

Special Admission Guidelines

Preparing for an actuarial career is a demanding process. A series of rigorous professional exams must be passed to become credentialed as an actuary, and employers often screen applicants at a 3.5 GPA or higher. Because of this, prospective students should note the program entry requirements that must be met in order to earn an actuarial science degree at UW-Eau Claire.
