Explore Opportunities
Creating connections that last
Ensuring that our students have endless opportunities available to them is a priority of the Institute for Health Sciences. We are continually in the process of developing new opportunities that will benefit Blugolds interested in the health sciences. Learn more about our current initiatives below.
Lecture series
An initiative of the Institute of Health Science is to bring current leaders from health and science-related industries to lecture on campus. These opportunities are available to a variety of majors and encourage students and faculty to connect on a common topic.
Bringing thought leaders to Blugolds

Dr. Rima DeFatta, a local ear, nose, and throat surgeon with a special interest in the human voice, spoke about the unique challenges facing patients with voice disorders. Dr. DeFatta was the keynote speaker at the World Voice Day Celebration in May 2015. Students had an opportunity to speak individually with Dr. DeFatta at a reception at the end of the event.

Dr. Randy Linton, CEO/President of Mayo Clinic Health System Northwest Wisconsin, spoke about the changing health care environment and new models of health care delivery. Afterwards, students from a variety of majors were able to share their perspectives.

Dr. Amit Acharya was on campus on April 26, 2016. He talked about how Health Informatics and Information Technology plays an increasing role in facilitating access to care, managing population health, improving patient experience, decreasing the per capita cost, improving workflow efficiency, integrating care across clinical disciplines, and achieving the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s “Triple Aim” for optimizing the performance of the healthcare system. Dr. Acharya is a clinician and computer scientist with expertise in biomedical informatics, and the director of the Institute for Oral and Systemic Health at the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation.
Providing partnerships
Connecting campus with the health community
Eau Claire is home to several large health-care providers. UW-Eau Claire works hard to get our students out in the surrounding health community to make valuable experiences available to Blugolds. The goal of the Institute for Health Sciences is to continue to build on the current relationships and make them even stronger.
