The Department of Special Education prepares teachers of high quality. Graduates in Special Education will be able to assume the full range of teaching responsibilities demanded by the profession. Our relevant and rigorous teacher education program includes extensive and developmentally appropriate field experiences. Special Education candidates will acquire the pedagogical skills and the professional dispositions to design and deliver individualized instruction, assess learning and manage the full spectrum of special education services including IEP implementation and management, inclusive practices and pupil advocacy. The Department emphasizes collaborative leadership practices essential to serve learners in least restrictive environments. Programs of study include licensure categories that prepare teachers to work with students with disabilities from ages birth-21.
