Marketing focuses on building customer relationships. It is a process that begins with discovering unmet customer needs and continues with researching the potential market; producing a good or service that satisfies targeted consumers; and promoting, pricing and distributing that good or service.

All organizations-profit-oriented and not-for-profit engage in marketing activities because all organizations must serve customer needs to succeed.

As a marketing student you will learn to...

  • identify multiple market opportunities using environmental scanning variables.
  • conduct market research to make better decisions regarding marketing problems and opportunities.
  • create successful marketing strategies.
  • identify the marketing mix and its associated components.
  • identify what is marketing segmentation and the common bases used to segment consumer markets. 

Marketing analytics emphasis majors will also be able to utilize the application of various software technologies to solve marketing problems and administer ongoing marketing programs.

Marketing professional sales emphasis majors will also be able to...

  • demonstrate a professional sales presentation in a classroom setting and in an outside field setting.
  • describe the duties and interactions required of an entry-level sales person and the role of the sales manager.
  • describe and assess a field sales force in terms of how it is organized, motivated, evaluated and compensated.

 Careers in marketing include advertising, purchasing, retail buying, sales, brand or product management, store management, logistics, and events planning.

Comprehensive Marketing Majors

60 credits, no minor required

General Marketing 
The marketing program prepares students for success through a curriculum that includes a strong liberal education core, and major-specific coursework that provides in-depth knowledge of marketing and business. The program also helps students develop communication, teamwork, and problem solving skills, which are highly valued by organizations seeking to employ marketing professionals.

Marketing Analytics
The marketing analytics emphasis in the marketing program prepares students for success through a curriculum that includes a strong liberal education core, and major-specific coursework that provides in-depth knowledge of marketing, databases, and business. The program also helps students develop communication, teamwork, and problem solving skills, which are highly valued by organizations seeking to employ marketing analysts.

Professional Sales 
The professional sales emphasis in the marketing program prepares students for success through a curriculum that includes a strong liberal education core, and major-specific coursework that provides in-depth knowledge of marketing, sales, and business. The program also helps students develop communication, teamwork, and problem solving skills, which are highly valued by organizations seeking to employ sales professionals.

Marketing Minor

24 credits

Gives students an overview of marketing principles and practices. The minor is available to all College of Business students except those majoring in marketing.

Certified Sales Student Certificate

Coursework + extracurricular experience

This certificate recognizes students for going beyond minimal course requirements in preparing themselves for successful sales jobs and careers. To be awarded the Certified Sales Student designation, students must be a declared marketing major or minor.  The certificate is awarded by the University Sales Center Alliance.  It is not considered a second program of study toward satisfaction of university graduation requirements.
