Exploring the German language

Teach the next generation the history of the German language. Communicate with German business partners during a meeting. These are a few paths you can choose from when you join the award-winning German program at UWEC.

The German program offers a variety of majors and minors that will prepare you with skills to succeed in your future. View general information about German below. If you want more detailed course information, please refer to the catalog.

The languages department is a great department at UW-Eau Claire. The professors understand that language is a hard subject to conquer, so they use helpful tools to help you grasp the material. They are also passionate about what they teach and have a love for their language.

German, Liberal Arts Major

36 credits

Learn the practical usage of the German language during your first two years. Then develop a cross-cultural understanding of the culture, literature, and more.

Liberal Arts Emphasis
Business/Professions Emphasis

German, Minor 

24 credits

Provides a general foundation of the German language and culture. Great to addition to any major.

German, Teaching Major

Share your passion with others by becoming a German teacher. Courses in culture, composition, literature and more will prepare you with a practical usage of the language.

German, Teaching Minor

Consider adding this minor to any teaching major. The German teaching minor is restricted to students in the College of Education and Human Sciences. The following areas of concentration are available:

Early Adolescence/ Adolescence

Education Studies: Option B or C and leads to licensure to teach German in this area of concentration

Middle Childhood/Early Adolescence

Education Studies: Option A and leads to licensure to teach German in this area of concentration

Early Childhood/Adolescence

Education Studies: Option C and leads to licensure to teach German in this area of concentration when combined with a major in another foreign language at the the early childhood through adolescent level.
