FAQs about Orientation

New Freshmen Orientation

We know things can get confusing. You may be surprised to know that everyone is asking similar questions and we have gathered those answers below. If you don’t see your question listed, make sure to contact us personally so we can help you.

The day of

We always say the sooner, the better. However, make sure to pick a day that not only works for you, but for your parent(s)/guest as well. You'll be selecting classes for your first semester and as orientation goes on, the classes become fewer and fewer. We monitor classes closely, though, to offer more sections if needed. And don't forget your placement exams need to be completed before your orientation — so pick a session that offers them the day before if you haven't already taken them. 

No worries! You can change your date through the web registration system until end of May. After that you will need to call 715-836-5053

We have a session for you as well. A comparable orientation program will be offered in August because you’re required to attend orientation.

That can easily be changed. Just make sure to make the change before the day you’ve selected, because you get assigned an advising group based upon your major, so it is important that this information is as accurate as possible.

We recommend you take the placement tests during the Regional Placement Testing this spring. If you don’t complete your placement tests during that time, you can take them on campus the day before your orientation session.

This means that particular day is full, so make sure to have a backup day. You can keep checking back to see if there’s an opening, but there won’t be a waiting list. 

You should definitely do that! You’ll just need to coordinate with your friend. Not all sessions are open for all majors, so make sure to be registering at the same time to get the same day.

  • Your new password if you created one — you’ll need this to register for classes.
  • Your driver’s license or a state issued ID
  • A sweater (temperatures in our buildings vary, be prepared for everything)
  • An umbrella, you’re never too cool to be dry.
  • Dress comfortably.
  • A good attitude — it will seem overwhelming, but keep your chin up, everyone there is either there to help or are experiencing the same emotions.

Each evening before your orientation day, we host a social event in our Davies Student Center at 7 p.m. with a few of our orientation student staff. This is the perfect time to start getting questions answered, meeting other families attending orientation the next day and enjoying some refreshments. Otherwise, Eau Claire always has something going on throughout the summer. Check out Volume One or Visit Eau Claire for the happenings around the town for you and your family to enjoy.

Otherwise, if you’d like a true residence hall experience, stay in Haymarket Landing. Here’s some additional information:

  • The fee to stay in Haymarket Landing is $40 per unit, per night for an apartment (four people max) and will be added to the student’s bill in the fall.
  • Linens, blankets, pillows, and towels will be provided.
  • Overnight parking in the underground parking garage is available to guests staying in Haymarket Landing.

Reservation Information

Option 1: Sign-Up in Advance

When you sign up for your Orientation date, you can indicate in the online Orientation sign-up system that you’d like to stay in Haymarket Landing.

Option 2: Walk-In

If you’ve already registered for Orientation and did not sign up for Haymarket Landing, no problem! You can stop by Haymarket’s front desk to arrange a room.

If a disability (temporary or permanent) requires a special accommodation during orientation, please notify the Orientation Office 715-836-5053 at least two weeks before your assigned orientation date. We also have elevators available in the buildings you’ll primarily be using. We want your day to go as smoothly as possible, so please contact us to ensure you have a good orientation day.

Residence halls

You will know this the beginning of June, watch your email and mailbox!

Try to call your roommate or meet them in person. Ask the questions of who brings what and set expectations early-on. Don’t just research him/her on social media because that could lead to a lot of misunderstandings about one another down the road.

Microwaves, mini fridges and coffee makers are the most popular. We don’t allow candles, toasters, hot plates — really any open heat source.

Move in is a very exciting yet stressful time. Make sure to communicate with parents and roommates to make this more stress free.

Financial aid

You could hear as early as March. If you have specific questions about your financial aid, give them a call at 715-836-3000 or check out their page for more information.

Parking and transportation

You’ll have to apply for a parking permit through our lottery system. Just fill out the application in the Housing and Residence Life mailing in early June. You’ll be notified if you receive a permit by early August. 

Technology

We’ve got you covered! You can find your username is the orientation small envelope mailing with a blue card inside, your username is on the front of that envelope. It’s a combo of your first and last name and various numbers. We’ll also have your username readily available to you at orientation if you can’t remember it.

If you’ve forgotten your password, you can reset it here. Once there, enter your username, student ID number and your PIN. Your PIN is a four-digit number you received on the blue card in the small orientation mailing envelope.

If you have further questions related to account activation or changing/resetting your password, please contact the LTS Help Desk at 715-836-5711 or helpdesk@uwec.edu.

Contact us or the Registrar’s Office. We can send you a copy of your PIN in the mail. Otherwise, you can get your PIN number at orientation.

Transfer Orientation

Transfer Orientation programs are now arranged as a one-on-one appointment with an advisor.  These appointments are flexible and can be done via phone, video chat, or in person.  The schedule will vary based on when you are available. 

Guests are always welcome to attend transfer orientation with their student but there are no separate parent/guest sessions.  Guests attend the same session as their student.
