FAQs about Online Orientation

New Freshmen Online Orientation

We know things can get confusing. You may be surprised to know that everyone is asking similar questions and we have gathered those answers below. If you don’t see your question listed, make sure to contact us personally so we can help you.

The day of

We always say the sooner, the better. However, make sure to pick a day that not only works for you, but for your parent(s)/guest as well. You'll be selecting classes for your first semester and you'll want as many options as possible. We monitor classes closely, though, to offer more sections if needed. And don't forget your placement exams need to be completed before your scheduled orientation date.

No worries! You can change your date through the web registration system until end of May. After that you will need to call 715-836-5053

We have a session for you as well. As you are required to attend Orientation, comparable orientation sessions will be offered in July and August.

That can easily be changed. Just make sure to make the change before the day you’ve selected, because you get assigned an advising group based upon your major, so it is important that this information is as accurate as possible.

Placement tests are now available, and you are able to register for and complete the exams here. All students are required to take placement tests, and students must use their UWEC email account to register for them. Please do this as soon as possible to ensure your scores are ready for your scheduled orientation appointment.

This means that particular day is full, so make sure to have a backup day. You can keep checking back to see if there’s an opening, but there won’t be a waiting list.

  • Your UWEC username, student ID number, and the password you created — you’ll need this to register for classes.
  • Completion of your Pre-Orientation module in Canvas. Again, watch your email for more information, as the module will be released to students on June 1st.
  • Access to internet
  • A computer (a tablet or mobile phone will work if you don’t have access to a computer, but these are less user-friendly when signing up for classes). We also recommend using Chrome as your search engine if accessing Collaborate Ultra -Virtual sessions.
  • A good attitude — there is a lot to learn when transitioning to college. Your Orientation day will be a success if you: complete your Pre-Orientation in Canvas, follow the set schedule, are ready to learn new information, interact when meeting new people, and openly ask any questions you might have. Remember, many of your peers will experiencing similar questions and emotions, and our staff will be there to support you.

If a disability (temporary or permanent) requires a special accommodation during orientation, please email the Services for Students with Disabilities Office at ssd@uwec.edu, at least two weeks before your assigned Orientation date if possible. We want your day to go as smoothly as possible, so please reach out ahead of time.

Microwaves, mini fridges and coffee makers are the most popular. We don’t allow candles, toasters, hot plates — really any open heat source.

  • Move in is a very exciting yet stressful time. Make sure to communicate with parents and roommates to make this more stress free. Review all move in details here.
  • Check out the Ultimate Packing List for suggestions on what to pack.
  • Carts are provided during Move-In; however, we do suggest dollies and a toolkit.
