What nonprofit did you work with?

Muscular Dystrophy Camp-Maple Lake, MN

What did you do for your service-learning?

This summer I was able to volunteer at a muscular dystrophy camp in Maple Lake, Minnesota. I was paired with one camper that I to ensure their safety and well-being for their week at camp. Together we were able to enjoy a lot of fun events like fishing, swimming, arts, crafts, and much more.

What motivated you to choose this project?

I have always enjoyed working with kids, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to apply my kinesiology skills while connecting with the children.

Is your service-learning relevant to your field of study?

As a kinesiology major, I was really excited to be able to use my service-learning as a learning experience that related to my major. I have dreams of working as an occupational therapist one day and this experience truly reinforced that.

How did you impact your community?

I wouldn't say that I had a direct impact on the community I was serving, because these campers come from all over the state.

However I believe that I have had an effect on each of these campers and that effect can be seen in the children. Watching the children interact with each other was so moving. They never let their disability show while they were at camp.

Would you recommend this to other students?

Yes, yes, yes! I would recommend this to everyone. The Muscular Dystrophy Association is always looking for volunteers for camps around the nation. It is just such a great experience.

How would you summarize the experience in one sentence?

This experience has reinforced my dreams of working with children.
