Fierce Freedom

What did you do for your service-learning?

My goal was to bring awareness of human trafficking that is occurring in the United States, including Eau Claire. I have partnered with Fierce Freedom and the on-campus organization called International Justice Mission to bring awareness to this unknown topic. I plan to educate students through posters I created with my graphic design skills during the International Justice Week.

What motivated you to choose this project?

This is something that I find very interesting and important. I grew up in a small town thinking this kind of thing only happens in other countries, but the more I learned, the more I wanted others to realize the truth about human trafficking too. I was introduced to the project through my Communications and Journalism 307 course where we are required to address a Social Project Research Project in the form of a presentation. My group and I found this topic, and our interest lead us in this direction.

Is your service-learning relevant to your field of study?

Yes, as a liberal arts major with a graphic design emphasis, I specifically was responsible for designing and creating the poster that was displayed in the Davies Center during the International Justice Week. Beyond that, I also furthered my communication and academic skills from conducting research to the presentation. It was a great learning experience.

How did you impact your community?

This service-learning opportunity has really opened my eyes to the world around me.I hope that students absorb the information I have presented and use it to be able to identify and help in a situation that may involve human trafficking. Action starts at the community level, but if we all make an effort, human trafficking could decrease or even diminishes.

Would you recommend this to other students?

Yes, most definitely. This opportunity was a lot of fun to get involved on campus and learn more about the community I live in. Don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.

Can you summarize the whole experience in one sentence?

This has been the most eye opening thing I've ever experienced. It got me thinking, what can I do to motivate others.
