UW-Eau Claire hits the airwaves
The million-dollar gift of a radio station from Mid-West Family Broadcasting in Eau Claire to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation means expanded educational opportunities for UW-Eau Claire students and new avenues for university outreach to a wider audience.
The Chippewa Valley's first indie rock station, 99.9 FM focuses on student-produced programming, providing undergraduates with valuable hands-on, high-impact learning opportunities. Students who work at the station are able to complete their service-learning requirement or gain valuable internship opportunities while producing programming with a focus on local music and stories from our region — learning professional skills for careers in the broadcast market.
Blugold Radio (see the station's website and Facebook page) also provides value for the university, serving as another venue where the Blugold story can be told. Blugold Radio is owned and operated by Blugold Radio LLC, a subsidiary of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. Key programming partnerships are being developed with UW-Eau Claire, Blugold athletics and Wisconsin Public Radio:
- Plans are in the works for 99.9 FM to be the official radio presence for Blugold athletics.
- Student-produced programming that has aired weekly on WUEC 89.7 in partnership with Wisconsin Public Radio for more than a decade will now be simulcast on Blugold Radio, providing that longstanding student outlet an expanded broadcast radius and the ability to stream its programming over the internet for the first time.
- Additional collaborations with academic departments at UW-Eau Claire are being explored.
The work of Blugold Radio is not funded by university or state dollars, so support from donors is important to ensuring that the station continues providing high-impact learning experiences for students and telling the UW-Eau Claire story in our region.
