Homecoming Football Team Chancellor at Homecoming Parade

Hundreds of alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of UW-Eau Claire gathered Oct. 16-17 for Homecoming 2009. Blugolds from near and far were on hand to enjoy pleasant weather, the festive parade, a thrilling 34-26 football victory over UW-Platteville and a Fifth Quarter celebration featuring music by the Blugold Marching Band. Former Blugold athletes inducted into Hall of Fame

Three national champions and two All-Americans were among nine individuals inducted Oct. 24 into the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Hall of Fame.

Members of the 2009 class are football players Roger Hedrington '60 and Cary Osborn '91, basketball player Eric Davis '90, '93 (MS), basketball player and coach Todd Oehrlein '91, volleyball and track athlete Maria (Jensen) Miller '98, track athlete Lisa (Marshall) Irsfeld '95, diver Sara (Mulatz) Toth '96, swimmer Pat Anderson '91 and sports information director and athletics administrator Tim Petermann '71.

The group represents the 33rd class of men’s inductees and the 20th class of women’s inductees and brings the number of athletes, coaches and administrators who have been honored to 174. Full story. back to top

This year's Connections magazine available online

Connections magazine coverThe 2009 issue of Connections magazine, produced by UW-Eau Claire’s College of Education and Human Sciences, is now available online. The theme for this year's issue is "promoting Equity, Diversity, Inclusiveness."

Connections includes college news and feature stories about students, faculty, alumni and programs affiliated with the academic departments of communication sciences and disorders, education studies, kinesiology, social work and special education. Also included in the 2009 issue is the CoEHS annual report for 2008-09. back to top

Smartt Network updates alumni on job opportunities

Smartt logoEarlier this year, the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association announced its partnership with the SMARTT Network, a free online service created by the Eau Claire Area Economic Development Corporation, to connect individuals with career, business and technology opportunities in western Wisconsin. Through the SMARTT Network, alumni can receive monthly news and updates and easily stay connected to opportunities in the region.

“This program provides a terrific opportunity for our alumni who are looking for employment opportunities in the Chippewa Valley,” said John Bachmeier, director of alumni relations at UW-Eau Claire.

Users can create a free, confidential profile in less than five minutes to start receiving monthly updates about area businesses, key career opportunities and technologies available for licensing.

The SMARTT Network also includes a relocation section to provide individuals interested in moving to western Wisconsin with information about area schools, population, income and buying power, culture and real estate. Learn more. back to top

Foundation celebrates 50th anniversary

Foundation medallionThe UW-Eau Claire Foundation celebrated its 50th anniversary at the organization's annual board meeting Oct. 16. As part of the celebration, eight former board presidents and chairs received the lifetime emeritus director designation.

Receiving the emeritus director designation were David G. Anderson, Janice Ayers, Richard Cable, Duane Dingmann, Jon N. Homstad, Joseph Mirr and Ken Vance, all of Eau Claire; Larry Weber of Durand; and Carole Halberg, former president of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, of Madison and Eau Claire. Full story. back to top

Blugold Marching Band to give stage show Nov. 3

Blugold Marching BandThe UW-Eau Claire Blugold Marching Band, one of the most active marching bands in the upper Midwest, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Zorn Arena.

The special stage performance will include a celebration of Blugold traditions. The performance will feature "Get Your Groove On: Music You Can Dance To," with songs including "Love Rollercoaster," "Shout," "Play that Funky Music" and a Kool & the Gang collection. The performance also will feature classic rock hits and songs in honor of America.

The Blugold Marching Band is directed by Randal Dickerson, associate professor of music. Full story. back to top

World-famous Vienna Boys Choir to give November performance

The Vienna Boys Choir — one of the world's oldest choirs and among the most famous — will perform Tuesday, Nov. 10, at UW-Eau Claire. Returning to the Artists Series after 15 seasons, the celebrated ensemble will begin its concert at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena. Food and beverages will be available for purchase from 6:45 p.m. until showtime and at intermission.

The Vienna Boys Choir will be conducted by Manolo Cagnin, who is making his first visit to North America with the boys. Gerald Wirth has been the choir's artistic director since 2001. Full story. back to top

OK Go to present concert at UW-Eau Claire Nov. 12


OK Go, the band that created the decade's most viewed music video — the treadmill-choreographed "Here It Goes Again" — will appear in concert Thursday, Nov. 12, at UW-Eau Claire. Doors will open at 7 p.m. for the show in Zorn Arena. Princeton will be the opening act.

OK Go is touring internationally in support of the group's upcoming album, "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky," to be released Jan. 12 on Capitol Records. Produced by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT), the record is the long-awaited follow-up to the acclaimed "Oh No" (2005), which included the song that became the 2007 Grammy Award-winning video hit, "Here It Goes Again." So well known that it was even parodied on "The Simpsons," the viral music video has been viewed more than 48 million times on YouTube, which OK Go helped transform into a household name. Catch the game live!

Blugold Football GameWatch the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds take on the UW-La Crosse Eagles in live football action Saturday, Nov. 7, on WQOW-TV channel 18 or on wqow.com. Pregame coverage begins at 11 a.m.; kickoff is at 11:30 a.m.

In the meantime, the Blugolds travel to Oshkosh to face the UW Oshkosh Titans Saturday, Oct. 31. Action in that game gets under way at 7 p.m. back to top

Lisa Nutter '96, who received a master of science in nursing from UW-Eau Claire, has joined Gundersen Lutheran clinics in Minnesota as a nurse practitioner. Full story.

UW-Eau Claire excellence seal Sheldon Hanson '81, a UW-Eau Claire accounting graduate who also received a master of business administration degree in 1984, has been hired as interim fiscal affairs director for the Winona Area Public Schools. Full story.
JoAnne Brandes JoAnne Brandes '75, a UW-Eau Claire journalism and political science graduate, was a featured presenter during an Oct. 27 luncheon sponsored by Tempo Waukesha, an organization of professional women. Full story.
UW-Eau Claire excellence seal Tiffany Chartier '01, a UW-Eau Claire marketing graduate and physical education teacher at Cypress Lake High School in Fort Myers, Fla., won the women's title in the second annual Fort Myers Cops and Joggers 5K. Full story.

Todd Carothers '93, a UW-Eau Claire accounting and management information systems graduate, has joined the faculty at UW-Platteville, where he teaches accounting and business classes. Full story.
