Purpose of the Organization

Offering services through four offices in 19 counties, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of La Crosse proclaims Christ’s Gospel of Life and promotes human dignity by alleviating poverty and strengthening individuals and families. The Eau Claire office provides adoption, pregnancy support, post-adoption, emergency services, housing counseling, and a homeless shelter named Sojourner House.

Volunteer Opportunities Available

Front Desk Receptionist:
>  Main duties include answering incoming phone calls, greeting clients, answering questions about Catholic Charities programs, processing mail, receipting donations, and assisting staff with projects as needed.  Training is provided. Must be able to work with a diverse group of people in a non-judgmental manner and be able to understand and maintain confidentiality. Various shifts are available Monday - Thursday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.. Also looking for anyone with a flexible schedule to be an "on-call" volunteer to help cover others' shifts during the week.

Sojourner House Volunteers:
>  Greeter — Set the tone for the evening operations by the way you welcome residents into the shelter, understanding that the shelter is a place of hope, acceptance and restoration. Shift coverage 6:45–9 p.m.
>  Intake Interviewer — Get each resident checked in each and every night. Help create an atmosphere of mutual respect by assisting in the intake interviews, the rules and guidelines review, and the bed assignments. Understand that the shelter is a place of acceptance regardless of hopes and ambitions. Shift coverage 6:30–9 p.m.
>  Storage Room Monitor — Create a safe, comfortable environment for all. Collect personal belongings in exchange for evening bedding. Understand Sojourner House’s zero tolerance policy. Shift coverage 6:45–9 p.m. and 6–8 a.m.
>  Laundry Patrol — Maintain an orderly evening operation. Schedule showers and laundry use, and supervise laundry operations. Shift coverage 6:45–10 p.m.
>  Food Provider — Meet the essential need of healthy food by providing residents with an evening snack, small meal or breakfast.
>  Overnight Hospitality — Create a warm and dignified environment that offers help with basic needs of food, shelter and connection to a greater caring community. Understand that the shelter is a place of hope and restoration. Shift coverages 7:30 p.m.–1 a.m. and 1–7 a.m.
>  Kitchen Helper — Provide a warm smile and good food to set a positive tone for the evening or morning. Shift coverages 6:45–9:45 p.m. and 5:45–7:45 a.m.
>  Front Desk and Data Entry — Assist the emergency services case manager and client support assistant in answering phones and helping walk-in clients at the front desk. Input basic information into a database.
>  Adoption / Post - Adoption Volunteer — Help plan special events, create information packets for prospective adoptive parents, and help with various adoption administrative duties.
