Course Objectives
Introduction to the principles, patterns and processes that have shaped the evolution of organisms and their
interactions with the environment. A variety of field and laboratory experiences will focus on methods of scientific inquiry.
Requirements
1. There is no formal lecture attendance policy. Be informed that on average, most students tend to lose 3 points off their final grade per class missed. Therefore the penalty for missing class is a greater likelihood of a poor grade. Lab attendance is mandatory, any unexcused absence will result in recording a zero for any and all lab work for that day. Labs may not be made up.
2. Exams that are missed may be made up if you can arrange for an excused absence from the dean's office. Make up exams will take place at 3 p.m. on Thursday December 14, 2006.
3. Points:
| 100 | Exam 1 |
| 100 | Exam 2 |
| 100 | Exam 3 |
| 180 | lab exercises & participation |
| 200 | Final Exam |
| 680 | TOTAL |
Note 1: the final exam will be comprehensive and will cover
everything in both lecture and lab.
Note 2: you must have an overall exam score at least 60% to pass this course.
Note 3: if you earn >90% on all three regular exams and have earned >90% in lab, you will be excused from taking the final exam.
Getting Help EW's office hours are immediately after lecture (10:45 - 11:30 a.m.) and during lab. If you want more attention, tutors are available at the
Academic Skills Center (36-5844) and through the Biology Club. Please note: We will spend time outside during the first four weeks of lab. Dress
accordingly. If you have any medical condition that could place you at
risk, you must inform your lab instructor as soon as possible. If
something happens out in the field, we need to have some idea what's wrong
(e.g., epilepsy, diabetes, bee allergies, etc.). Any student who has a disability and is in need of classroom accommodations,
please contact the instructor and Office of Services for Students with
Disabilities. This course helps meet goals 1,
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 of the baccalaureate degree.
If your final exam score is higher
than the average for your three exams, then your exam scores will be replaced by
the final exam score.
Rationale: if in the end you have learned
everything, then your grade should show it.
