Web Publishing Basics

Access for Student or Staff Organization Web Publishers

Your organization has been granted a Web account, which gives you space on the UWEC public Web server. That's half the battle. Getting access to create or maintain the pages is the rest of it. When a new Web account is created, the requestor is sent an email message with basic information. Refer to this page for more information or when new members become Web publishers.

Your Web Account and URL

In general, when we refer to an account name, we are simply talking about the identifying portion of your site's URL. For instance, if your site is http://www.uwec.edu/ama, your account name is 'ama'. Conversely, if you know your account name, you can figure out your site's URL.

Tip: If you name your main page "index.htm", the above address is all that your visitors will need to use in order to locate your site. Also, any pages stored in your space are included in the UWEC Web search index.

Web Editing Permissions

Permissions for student organizations are maintained by staff members in the Activities and Programs office. Whenever a change in Web publishers is needed, please fill out the Permissions Change Request form.

Staff organizations should refer to the document "Working with Web Account Permissions" found in the Online Help collection.

Mapping a drive - PC users

To be able to edit the Web files in the area, you will need to map or mount a drive to your shared account area using the following path format:

  • \\lucy\yourAccountName$
    • Substitute your Web account name for "yourAccountName". Be sure to use the "$" symbol at the end)

More information can be found at Connecting to Lucy

Mounting a drive - Macintosh users

Use the format below and see the online instructions for Connecting to Lucy

  • //lucy/yourAccountName$
    • Substitute your Web account name for "yourAccountName". Be sure to use the "$" symbol at the end)

A-Z list links

When your site is complete and satisfies the requirements in the UW-Eau Claire Web Style Guide and Web Guidelines, you may request that your site be linked in the A-Z list by sending an email request to web@uwec.edu.

Web Space Limits

Your site is limited to 50MB on the Web server.

Retrieving Lost Files

If you accidentally delete a file or files, or need a page restored from a previous date, we can retrieve them for you, within a limited period of time. Contact Web Development Services (836-4214 or 836-3058) or send an email message to: web@uwec.edu. NOTE: it may take several hours to a few days to retrieve data depending on staff availability.
