Tone is a discrete musical sound. Some examples of
tones, as they appear in spectrograms, are (1) a short horizontal bar (a pure
tone), (2) several short horizontal bars aligned vertically (a pitched tone,
often appearing in instrumental notes), (3) a thin vertical bar (a percussive
strike). Notes, including strikes of percussion instruments as well as
longer notes from instruments such as pianos, flutes, violins, human voices,
etc., are a very common example of tones.
(1) Pure Tones: The figure below shows a spectrogram with several pure tones.

(2) Pitched tones: The figure belows shows a spectrogram with several pitched tones.

(3) Percussion: The figure below shows a spectrogram of several drum strikes.
