Reverberation
Often referred to as
echo. It results from recording within closed rooms in studios
where the sounds echo off the walls and this is
recorded by high-fidelity
equipment. Sometimes this effect is intentionally amplified (e.g., John
Lennon's Instant Karma). The following spectrogram
was produced from a clip of the song, Making Me Nervous from the
Brad Sucks album. Listening to it you will here the reverb in the
voicing which highlights the theme of nervousness expressed in the
title.
Notice also the contrast between
the longer contours of the voice formants versus the short duration percussive
effects. This is a good example of oppositions within music (see Dialectical Development of Music for more
discussion).
