Mathematics

The mathematics that we employ is to perform continuous Gabor wavelet transforms of pulse trains.  Continuous Gabor wavelet transforms are described in detail in the following article (see especially section 4, pp. 466-474):  Time-frequency analysis of musical instruments.  Their application to pulse trains and the description of rhythm is described in the following:  Book extract (PDF) (pp. 237-241), which is an extract from the book, A Primer on Wavelets and Their Scientific Applications.
