Multiculturalism

Music has been called "the language of our souls" and also "the language of our spirit."  There is no human culture that does not have music as an integral part of its rituals and even its daily life.  Here are some examples of multiculturism within music:

1.  Universality of Rhythm     One aspect of the universality of music is in the realm of rhythm.  For illustrations of commonalities to rhythms from a diverse sampling of world music, see six examples of musical rhythm  .

2.  Music of Diverse Cultures    It is also the case that music of other cultures can be appreciated, for instance, Chinese music can often be perceived as beautiful to Western ears.  For some examples, see Chinese Folk Songs .

3.  Syntheses of Music from Different Cultures   Another, more recent, illustration of multi-culturism in music is the syntheses of various musical styles from around the world (facilitated by the world-wide connections made possible by technology).  As one example, we analyze the "Indian Hip-Hop" song, a synthesis of Indian melodies and rhythm with Hip-Hop rhythms and sonorities.  See Indian Hip-Hop (Chaiyya Chaiyya) .
