The pre-frontal cortex, sometimes called the "executive seat" of the brain, is involved in planning, global summarizing, the creation of expectation (including perception of repetition and hierarchical structure, see Hiearchical Structures in Music), and the perception of violation of expectations (including perception of musical opposites, see Dialectical Development of Music for further discussion of the role of opposition in musical theory and perception).
