Relation to Vision
An
important aspect of image processing is the relationship between the
methods employed and how our visual system interprets them.
Although the processing done by the visual cortex of our brains
is not completely understood, there has been a lot of progress made in
the last two decades in understanding how this processing is done.
An important feature of the new wavelet-based methods in image
processing that we study in this course is that they are highly
correlated with similar processes within our visual system. This
feature is one reason that wavelet-based methods are rapidly becoming
the standard approach in image processing, and we shall demonstrate
their advantages over earlier (Fourier based) methods in this course.
