Image Enhancement
Images frequently need processing in order to enhance their appearance. We show an example in the following figure.
Image of house
Edge enhanced image of house
The
image on the left is the original, blurry image of a house. The
image on the right is a processed image. The edges in the
original image have been sharpened. Although this image has some
defects compared to the original, there are also features that have
been considerably enhanced, such as the fencing in front of the house
and a vertical window divider in the middle of the image (which is
invisible in the original). This type of edge enhancement is
employed frequently in medical imagery and in scientific applications.
We will discuss this method, and other methods of image
enhancement, in the course.
