The Blugolds had a strong 2010-11 season, finishing in 14th place out of more than 430 schools in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, an award based on finishes at NCAA national championships.
Throughout the year, 13 of the Blugolds’ 22 teams were represented at national championships. Women’s cross country had the best finish of any team as it took fourth at nationals. At outdoor track and field nationals, Thomas Breitbach brought home two runner-up finishes in distance events. He also broke school records in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs this year. The previous 10,000-meter run record was set in 1988.
Along with athletic success, 573 Blugold student-athletes combined for a 3.14 grade-point average in 2010-11, making it the 10th year in a row the program reached a 3.0 GPA or better. The Blugolds also donated numerous hours to the community and helped the department with fundraising efforts.
