Barbara Palmer ’89, a UW-Eau Claire political science graduate, recently received the Gigax Faculty Scholarship Award from Baldwin Wallace University, where she serves as an associate professor of political science. The prestigious award recognizes a faculty member who, through effective scholarship, has enhanced the learning environment at the university.
Palmer, who holds a doctorate in political science from the University of Minnesota, is an expert on congressional elections and the success of women candidates. Her most recent book, “Women and Congressional Elections: A Century of Change,” co-authored with Dennis Simon and published in June 2012, explores how the “rules of the game,” such as incumbency, demographics and redistricting, shape the integration of women into Congress.
Palmer credits her UW-Eau Claire education and experiences with shaping her career path and successes.
“While I completely enjoyed my time as a college student, the older I get, the more I appreciate the education I received at UW-Eau Claire,” Palmer said. “The personal attention from the faculty, the fantastic events and opportunities to participate outside of the classroom, and even my on-campus jobs all played a major role in helping me get where I am today.”
