Graydon Royce ’80

Graydon Royce '80Graydon Royce ’80, a UW-Eau Claire journalism graduate, was named one of the 12 most influential theater critics in America in an article published by the Theatre Communications Group of New York in November 2011.

Royce has been a critic and fine arts writer for the Minneapolis Star Tribune for 13 years. He was a fellow at the 2003 O’Neill Theater National Critics Institute and a fellow at the National Endowment for the Arts Institute on Classical Music and Opera in 2009. Prior to his work on the drama desk, Royce was an editor in various capacities at the Star Tribune for 19 years.

“I have always believed the education I received as a journalism major gave me a leg up on others in this business,” Royce said. “Beyond that, people such as Les Polk (the late UW-Eau Claire associate professor of journalism) provided a model for how to conduct oneself that remains with me 32 years after graduation. I felt I was held to very high standards, which was exactly what I needed to prepare for a life of newspapering.”
