Steven Eisenreich ’69

Steven EisenreichSteven Eisenreich ’69 received the 2010 Founders Award, the highest award of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, for making exceptional contributions in the environmental sciences. Eisenreich is adviser to the Joint Research Centre’s Strategic Research Programme Directorate of the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium.

The UW-Eau Claire chemistry graduate led major scientific and coordination efforts in the European Union’s water framework directive, considered the most advanced model for protection of the ecology and functioning of water bodies, and he also led a recent EU directive for the safe use of chemicals by industries.

In 1994 Eisenreich received the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Advances in Science and Technology. He has been one of the most highly cited scientists in the areas of ecology/environment and engineering worldwide.

Eisenreich was professor of environmental chemistry for 27 years at the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis and at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He received UW-Eau Claire’s Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award in 2002.
