Laraine Teubert Schweig ’54 is among the 150 members of the Sun City Posse, a volunteer organization trained to assist the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in deterring crime in the Sun City, Ariz., unincorporated retirement community.
The UW-Eau Claire elementary education graduate moved to Sun City in 2004 to be closer to her daughter and family. Schweig said she was looking for a way to remain active after 20 years of teaching, most recently in the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., area. The Posse’s community outreach is extensive, from responding to minor neighborhood complaints to assisting the elderly.
Schweig has been a member of the Posse for five years, logged 2,243 volunteer hours in 2010 and reached the rank of lieutenant.
“My UW-Eau Claire degree in education is still serving me well,” Schweig said. “Sun City Sheriff’s Posse has reason to be proud of its service to our community, and I consider it an honor to serve.”
Posse members are trained in law and legal issues, directing traffic, patrolling and responding to 911 calls along with Sun City paramedics.
