Jacqueline Cobian West ’03 has had her first in a series of books for young readers published. “The Books of Elsewhere, Vol. 1: The Shadows” was released by Dial/Penguin. A chapbook of West’s poetry, titled “Cherma,” also was published this year by the University of Wisconsin’s Parallel Press.
“Having both come out at once, after years of work followed by years of waiting, has been dizzying and strange and wonderful,” West said.
West majored in music and minored in English at UW-Eau Claire. She went on to teach high school English but left last year when her publisher requested a multibook series.
Since then she’s met with booksellers, librarians and teachers in major cities from coast to coast, and she does book signings and readings as she awaits the release of Vol. 2.
“I’m lucky,” said West, who lives in Red Wing, Minn., with her husband, Ryan. “I’m doing just what I’d be doing if no one knew about it or wanted to read it or paid me for it.”
